Everyone, beware of this scheme!!! A guy stopped me in NYC, same story as above, same BS with Armani executives, asking for directions, etc. He even had an airline ticket. He tried to sell me 3 jackets (I buy 1, and he throws 2 in for free). The jackets looked decent; but I didn't have time, so I walked away. I checked his plates, and they said Minnesota. I'm lilke, "how did you rent a Minnesota car in NYC?" He showed me paperwork from National or some renting agency. I rent quite often and know that usually they give cars from the same state, or at most neighboring states, not Minnesota in NY. I even felt bad that I thought he was an *** trying to cheat. But I really had to go, so I left". He got back offering to give me a ride, I declined/.

So the moral is, while one may be able to find some great deals in NYC, if you are being offered Armani coats (which by the way did not have the Armani tag, just some RGA on them), do not buy them (judging on this site, that's a scam)?. And one more thing/. He said he was flying back to Italy, and had 3 coats left, and didn't want to pay taxes!. Then he mentioned that he had a different size (on top of the 3 he showed) in the trunk'. What the *** was he thinking!? At least sell your story right?. Up to now I had doubts, thought he was indeed Italian, trying to save money on taxes when flying back..

The guy, as above, was in his mid 20's, 5.6"-5.8", wearing some, I thought, fancy suit. Now I think it probably was some cheap BS, too.

Good luck to everyone, and be careful. 1297883

Had happened to me on Home Depot parking lot,

Irving, TX.

Same approach, asking for help. Started with 450 for one coat, giving me other 3 for free as gift.

Telling me he want to buy a video camera as gift. He showed his passport some Euro and telling had 170 dollars and need more 200.

Told him no money, not interested, but his saying that american will not help and can be a gift card. I was skepticall as what he can do with Home Depot gift card.

I try to help him and talk to two more persons at parking lot to get the deal to him.

He said that he's not sales man.

He also appeal to be as Christian and asked me about my faith.

After a while I walked away saying I need to but things home...

Very convinced; get home feeling bad as could not help him; until read the r.g.a armani scam....

yup happened to me too! hahaha 26th street and I believe 6th and 7th ave.

asked for direction to Lincoln Tunnel. He offered me a free jacket. I said no. I have too many jackets at home don't need another jacket even if it's Armani. His Italian accent was pretty good.

This guy approached me with the SAME ROUTINE in front of building in the E. 40s of NYC yesterday. I subsequently learned he has tried his routine on other residents in my building, including my doorman.

I was immediately suspicious when he tried to beckon me to his car by asking me a question with the softest voice he could muster--as if he were miming the words. I didn't go closer. Instead, I walked away, which is when he found his voice and tried the whole scam: directions to Queensboro Bridge, the fashion exhibit, the free suits, etc. FYI: When he said he was Italian from Milan, I told him I was from Naples, but he didn't respond to me in Italian. I don't think he is Italian.

Anyway, what I want to add to what others have mentioned here is that that during our brief conversation, another man--Mediterranean/Middle Eastern looking just like the driver--approached me on the sidewalk. I saw him out of the corner of my eye, mostly because the driver quickly glanced at him as the other man approached. I immediately stepped back and then walked away.

My point: There could be something more sinister going on. I think the other guy would have tried to rob me as I was distracted talking to the driver. Maybe even pickpocket and then throw my wallet in the car as it ***.

Beware: If they can't get you one way, they'll try another.

I guess I'm a victim too... but heck the jacket fits great, looks awesome, and I didn't pay much...

Same exact scam happened to me yesterday. he's really smooth at first if he catches you in a mental place where you aren't concentrating on details (like for instance why a fashion designer is driving around in a mini van on the UWS while claiming to be staying at the waldoff astoria and trying to catch a flight to JFK). Anyway, as a long time new yorker I'm embarrassed to say I almost fell for it. Had he not gotten greedy and offered me one coat I was ready to hand him a fifty. it wasn't until he started pushing 4 coats that I realized this had to be a scam and I noticed he kept saying "you give me a gift" which struck me as a strange legal way to cover his *** so out of nowhere I told him at this time of day he should really take the midtown tunnel not queensboro bridge and for a moment he slipped and just looked at me like he didn't give a *** either way and I knew he was full of it so then I peered into his van and asked where his luggage was?

he drove off pretty fast. I did get his license plate and his "fake name" he showed on his surely fake ID but not sure if the cops would be interested in this.

just met this guy, had to be the same thing

i was on 29th and lexington, he gave the whole story, i gave him directions to the queensboro bridge (usually i just ignore people asking) and then he was like "you come to italy and i show you great time" and i told him i was italian and that ive been there plenty of times, after a little italian conversation he thought he had me on the hook and offered the coats... i laughed and walked away

i hope no one would really fall for this, i guess he preys on tourists

Different flyes, same sht:

Jun2009.Annemasse, France. 20min from Geneve downtow. We were in a carwash, a guy pretending to be an italian shows up in a car, ask for directions and then offers armani suits because "he had just come from a fashion exibition and has these suits in the car". We said: Not interested, pal. We're from Rio. Cut off the sht.

Same story just happened to me on 20th b/w 1st and 2nd. Said he needed directions to Lincoln tunnel. He went through his spiel and I declined. Funny thing is that he didn't even use the directions I gave him and completely missed the left turn onto 1st ave.

I also like that he said that jackets would not fit him cause he is two meters tall. A little quick math and I thought, no way this guy is 6'9" tall.

I kinda wish that I had played him into giving me the three jackets for $100. Not a bad deal even for knockoffs.

This scam seems to have been going on since at least 2007. These guys must be finding plenty of suckers to keep their operation profitable. There is also no way that these are Italian made knockoffs. The jackets are either stolen goods or made in country with significantly lower textile labor costs (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Pakistan, China etc). The Italian guys/ guys with Italian accents are probably front-men for the operation.

So funny, last year I was stopped by an Italian guy near Home-depot centre, he opened the trunk and said'" I have some leather jackets, and I need to go back to my country and I don't want to pay taxes!!"

He sold me four jackets for 260$. The jackets look like leather and in very good shape in cover.
